Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) is excited to announce the Carson Occupational Therapy Assistant Scholarship, founded by John B. & Julie Carson. Julie Carson serves as program director in the occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program, using her 30+ years of practitioner experience to prepare students for successful careers as occupational therapy assistants. The $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to two OTA students entering their second year of the program. The scholarship is administered through the Office of Student Financial Aid of Indiana Wesleyan University. Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in IWU-National/Global.
- Be majoring in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.
- Be entering year two of the OTA program.
In its inaugural year in 2022, OTA student Hayley Frye was named the Carson Occupational Therapy Assistant Scholarship’s first recipient. Going forward, the award will be given to two winning students. An appointed review committee will include OTA faculty and a minimum of one member of the OTA advisory committee. The committee will submit candidates to Financial Aid, and the Office of Student Financial Aid will then review and award recipients. Applications will be accepted August 15 to October 15, 2023, and winners will be announced on December 1. The scholarship will be applied to tuition during the spring semester.
The occupational therapy assistant program prepares students to administer occupational therapy interventions under the direction of an occupational therapist with individuals who have lost functional abilities to perform everyday living tasks. Graduates are prepared to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Certification Exam for Occupational Therapy Assistants and to practice as a licensed professional. The basic curriculum is experiential and prepares students with a general education while combining classroom, laboratory and fieldwork/clinical experiences.
